The LikeTelevision™ History channel proudly presents, This Day In History - November 16! November 16, 1969 - Lieutenant William Calley Jr. faces the longest court martial in U.S. Army history when South Vietnamese villagers claim that Calley's platoon massacred 567 unarmed peasants in the village of My Lai. Calley served 3 years before a Federal judge in Columbus, Georgia ruled his court martial conviction unconstitutional. Thus, Calley was freed after the Army had first sentenced him to life, then 20, then 10 years of hard labor. Twenty-four others, including Calley's commander, Captain Ernest Medina were charged with the My Lai slayings and their cover-up, but only Calley was convicted. As a civilian, Calley later managed a jewelry store in Columbus.
