I have a dream, that one day, this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass - until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Dr. King's speech highlighted the great civil rights march on Washington, D.C. but only after the assassination of John Kennedy could Lyndon Johnson push through congress civil rights legislation that made discrimination against blacks in public areas a federal crime.
